What Is Salary Advancement, and How Do I Apply for It?

Salary advancement for full-time and part-time faculty is an area covered in Articles 12.4, 12.5, and 12.6 of the Collective Bargaining or CBA (aka the faculty contract).  All faculty are paid according to one or more salary schedules depending upon employment status (full-time or part-time) with the College and term (regular semester vs. intersession).  Each salary schedule contains steps or vertical movement down the column based on years/hours of service to the College (see Articles 12.4 and 12.5).  On the other hand, horizontal movement across the salary schedule is based on additional education, training, or professional service gained after initial placement on the salary schedule (see Article 12.6).

For most faculty, the College may accept a variety of “work” applicable toward salary advancement across the salary schedule columns:

  • Upper division or graduate units from an accredited college;
  • Doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education;
  • Community college coursework;
  • Non-teaching work experience;
  • Travel specifically related to improving the employee’s service;
  • Professional service supervising a cadet teacher;
  • Publication in recognized professional magazine or book;
  • Major leadership in local, state, or national professional organizations;
  • Public performance;
  • Noncredit adult classes; and
  • In-service seminars.

See Article 12.6 to learn how many “units” can be earned for each type of work.

Please note that some of the above work must be part of a course of study approved in advance by the Vice President of Instruction; other limitations or qualifications may apply as well, so do read Article 12.6 for all details.  Additionally, “[t]he decision for disapproval of. . . a step or class change is the responsibility of the Vice President for Instruction.”  For this reason, it is very important that you seek written approval in advance from the Vice President of Instruction to be on the safe side.  After you have completed the work and are ready to apply for salary advancement, complete the Application for Salary Class Change, attach grade slips or transcripts as verification of work completed, and submit the form and attachments to Human Resources.
