Flex Day is March 12, & Flexible Flex is… Whenever!

The Faculty Association and the District came to agreement on Flex activities and signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which put simply is an agreement that is effective immediately.

As we return for Spring Semester, faculty can fulfill their flex obligation of 12 hours a year by attending flex days such as the one held in August or the upcoming March flex day or by completing and tracking flex activities individually.

The FA successfully negotiated a broad list of activities qualifying for Flexible Flex credit. This allows faculty to receive Flex credit when pursuing their professional interests. Many of these activities are those faculty regularly engage in! The full list can be found on pages 15-19 of the Guidelines for the Implementation of the Flexible Calendar Program April 2007. This document was created by the Faculty Development Committee of the Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges. A sampling of activities can be found in the sidebar with the URL for the full document as a QR code.

As in the past, Part-time faculty are required to fulfill flex only if they’re scheduled to work on a scheduled Flex Day and only for the numbers of hours that they’re scheduled to work that day. Flexible flex works for part-timers, too, as they may complete and submit the same activities as Full-time faculty for Flex credit, or attend scheduled Flex activities equal to the number of hours that are scheduled for that day. Part-time faculty who are not scheduled to teach on Flex Day may participate but the District will not pay them for their participation.

Faculty who facilitate activities approved by the Flex Advisory committee or the Professional Development standing committee will receive 2 hours of Flex credit for every activity hour, and, in an additional improvement, faculty who develop and facilitate a new Flex activity will receive 3 hours of Flex credit for every activity hour.

Remember–we faculty are responsible for tracking our hours. Be sure to note Flex in your calendars when participating in Flex!
