Faculty Profile: Meet John Miner

John Miner learned to screen print at a local San Gabriel Valley high school and initially used his skills to make posters advertising performances of his punk band. After he noticed that few people came to his concerts, but that all of his posters disappeared from the neighborhood, he decided to give up music and dedicate himself to printing. John attended PCC and completed the Graphics Program here. He has worked as a Los Angeles area fine-art printer for years, first at the renowned Modern Multiples studio, and more recently as an independent printer.

His technical, aesthetic and business acumen bring a vital energy and a hearty dose of reality to classroom instruction. He’s an artist in his own right, but has also executed print runs in collaboration with such luminaries as Shepard Fairey, Chaz, John Van Hamersveld, and Frank Romero. You’ve seen Shepard Fairey’s Obama “Progress” poster? John’s work.

John teaches in the Graphic Communications Tech program, now a part of VAMS. In his entrepreneurship classes, he covers multiple levels of screen printing instruction, and adds a load of business perspective. Many of his students start businesses, and his direction helps them avoid the pitfalls of first-time small business owners. Miner covers pricing, billing, online presentation, sales and fulfillment, publicizing a business through Instagram, Facebook and other platforms, and more. John is a great asset to PCC, and its Graphic Communications Tech Program.
