What’s Happening NOW – June 17-21, 2013
… polemics and hyperbole are unnecessary when facts alone are so damning.
-David Kelly, LA Times reporter
Last week’s College Council highlights:
Process
- Dr. Rocha will be chairing all future College Council meetings
- Dr. Rocha indicated that even though the College Council was not a Brown Act meeting (there was no quorum), it would follow Brown Act procedures.
- Dr. Rocha reiterated the purpose of the College Council and his role per PCC Policy #2000.

Calendar – history repeating itself?
- Dr. Rocha presented three 2013-2014 academic calendars for consideration:
- A calendar with Winter Intersession, developed and approved by the Calendar Committee and approved the Academic Senate.
- A three-term calendar with a Spring semester beginning in early January, developed by unknown parties
- A three-term calendar with a Spring semester beginning in the second week of January, developed by unknown parties.
- Regarding the Calendar with winter, Dr. Rocha asked that members of the Council only speak if they had some new information to add to the conversation.
- Regarding the three-term calendars, Dr. Rocha was asked who had developed them given that the Calendar Committee had only approved a calendar with Winter. Dr. Rocha did not respond.
- Dr. Rocha indicated that the Board of Trustees would vote for the 2013-2014 earlier than last year. (That would mean either July 17 or August 7.)
PCC Police and Guns – back on the table
- In response to recent violence on school grounds throughout the nation, the College initiated a task force to deal with a “shooter scenario.”
- A Classified representative on the Council and a faculty member in the audience affirmed that a prior committee had voted to approve guns for PCC police, and a student a several faculty voiced their disapproval of arming campus police.
- Dr. Rocha stated that the Task Force’s recommensations would be taken to the Board of Trustees on July 17, 2013

Got data?
California Community College Chancellor’s Office – data mart
- how many full-time compared to part-time faculty are there in each district?
- what are average administrative, classified, faculty salaries across districts?
- what are the FTE counts for PCC for fall, spring, winter and summer semesters?
- what is the success and retention per department at PCC from 1999-2012, by semester and intersession?
- …and more!
Interesting reads:

- Two-tiered fee system won’t work – LA Times. Background: In a highly controversial move, the Senate Education Committee narrowly approved AB 955 (Williams) on a 5-2-2 vote. The measure authorizes districts to create a two-tier access system for the summer and winter intersessions. Under the proposal, students with financial means would be afforded an opportunity to take newly created “extension” courses charged at the full rate of instruction.
