PCCFA Supports Proposition 55!
PCCFA leaders urge that all faculty, staff, and students support Proposition 55 in the November elections. Recall that Proposition 30 in the November 2012 election saved community colleges from financial disaster. Voters supported it wholeheartedly, correctly viewing it as essential for K–14 education.
Now, Proposition 30 is about to expire, and enter Proposition 55 that will help ensure much needed funding for California’s community colleges.
Prop 30 had designated two funding sources. First was a sales tax of a quarter of one percent; second was an income tax on upper income earners ( single taxpayers making over $250,000 per year and married couples making a combined income of $500,000).
Proposition 30’s sales tax will expire December 2016, and Proposition 55 will not continue that tax. However, Proposition 55 will extend the income tax on high earners until 2030.
Recent polling shows widespread popularity for the measure as Proposition 55 has been endorsed by the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges, the state’s primary lobby organization for community colleges. It also has been endorsed by all major community college faculty unions (e.g. California Federation of Teachers and California Teachers Association) as well as California’s Parent Teacher Association.
Help ensure ongoing community college funding. Vote for Proposition 55!
