DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD: PCCFA Honors Dan Haley

The PCCFA has established the first Distinguished Faculty Award for significant contributions made to faculty rights and shared governance.

We are very pleased to announce that Dan Haley of the Library is the first recipient. A dedicated colleague, a steadfast proponent of faculty rights and governance, he played a heroic role on so many occasions.

Daniel Haley graduated with a Masters Degree in Library and Information Studies and also received his Ph.D in Information Studies from UCLA. He came to PCC in 1987, one of the first to be hired after massive cuts and layoffs in 1983 (another dark time at the college). Very early in his career, he chose faculty governance and served on the Academic Senate from 1990-95.

Thus he experienced firsthand the implementation of AB 1725 which established the principle of shared governance and gave more power to community college senates statewide.

His expertise in Information Studies served the PCC community well as he held a position on the Faculty Technology Committee from 1988—2010 and the Campus Computer/Technology Committee from 1989- 2011. He chaired the Faculty Technology Committee (2003-04). Dan’s staunch opposition to the PCC administration’s attempt to monitor faculty internet use (2005-06) is a hallmark of collegial integrity.

We welcomed Dan when he sought office in the PCC Faculty Union (then affiliated with CTA); he served as Treasurer (2002-04). He worked diligently to help establish a new collective spirit in the union which had undergone a major leadership change in 2001. Dan saw the necessity of union/senate collaboration and the need for each body to work together on collegial endeavors.

Thus he understood full well the dangers of narrowing the agendas (stove piping or siloing), and the often seen managerial practice of pitting senates and unions against each other.

Dan returned as a Senate representative in 2011. He subsequently served as Senate Treasurer, 2011-2014, which of course was during some of the most difficult times in the college’s history.

His steady demeanor, his unquestionable integrity, his exceptional knowledge base, his extraordinary work ethic, and perhaps above all, his refusal to bow to unjust authority establish his stature as one of our greatest PCC faculty.

Dan Haley is retiring, and we will miss him dearly. Congratulations Dan and thank you!
